Pocket Demon

Pocket Demon I Choose You!

Today's comic is based off of the four Inktober 2016 prompts:

  • Tired
  • Box
  • Creepy
  • Burn

Kamiko's not one to run away. For one thing the shoes make it difficult too. For another it's better to face your problems than run from them. She's got the right tool too. A demon...in her pocket. Kinda creepy, but the weird sluggy looking demon saves the day.

Two things I want to share with you today:

This Mortal Coil Graphic Novel Vlog

First off, this video I made of the complete graphic novel. I posted the video last week, but I didn't really get into it, but it's about a vanity print I did of my graphic novel.

Check out the video for a flip through and listen to me talk about it.

Yes, you get to see my face.

Yes, this is the first time I've put my face on camera and done a vlog.

This video ended up taking the whole day. I shot it with my iPad and iPhone and put it together using iMovie on the tablet, and I went out of my way of putting music tracks down and trying to do interesting shots of my work -- like a timelapse flip through of the book.

I had fun doing it, but video production is a time consuming process.

I'd like to do it again and make it something somewhat semi-regular so I can have a presence on Youtube and be more connected with the work I'm doing here at This Mortal Coil and elsewhere.

If you like this video, please subscribe to my channel and I'll produce more stuff over time.

But, yes, I have a physical copy of the graphic novel and it's unfortunately not perfect. It's a proof of concept but I'll need to get a better printer than Createspace because it doesn't seem to do comics very well -- at least high contrast ones. The other issue: if I self-publish via Createspace, the cost will be too high. We're talking $35. Way too much.

As an alternative, I'm selling the graphic novel as a Kindle download, $2.99 per book. The first book is already out on Amazon.

I'm using this to get some books published under my name out on Kindle. I don't expect many sales of this one. I might need a few more issues of This Mortal Coil before I see much traction, or anything at all.

Here's the cover:

The Rabbit and the Moon Issue #1 Cover | Comixology | Digital Publication | This Mortal Coil

So that's vlogging, printed comics, and the Kindle version of This Mortal Coil.

More Weekly Content

The other thing I wanted to talk about was having more weekly content.

More updates means more reasons for folks to come back to the site. Maybe increased engagement and growth. (thumbs up)

So, the site's comic reader allows me to update multiple books. If you look at the Archive there are a few. That means The Galactic Train, The Rabbit and the Moon, One of Us, and Fan Comics are each individual "books" where I can collect the pages together. That way, in theory, I could update multiple books over the week. You'd get those updates in your RSS feed or any given day of the week you'd see a different comic, and then if you wanted to read the whole thing together, you could visit the archive.

I've talked about doing 4koma comics which would mean that you'd hopefully see that twice a week. There is still some fan art and other work that I haven't posted on here yet, so definitely more Art is coming. I also have blog posts I've been meaning to write, which could also have a vlog component.

Blog and Art sections seem secondary to the comic, as they should be, and I've been wondering if they should also become books so they get the same visibility. That way I could make an Art Book in which the pages contain the various art pieces. Maybe a Sketchbook for doodles.

So yeah, you may see more and varied updates coming to the site over time. It's a thing I'm thinking about.

You may see another post this week. We'll see.

Otherwise, I'll talk to you again next Monday!

If you want to chat back, leave me a comment below. FYI, all comments are moderated to keep spambots out. So if you don't see your comment right away, that's the reason. I'll accept and answer back (unless it's spam).
